Family-Friendly Folk at the Regent Theatre Saturday

Patch spoke with Margot Fox about her upcoming concert.

Margot Fox knows two things – music and kids. She has three children of her own, ages six, 10 and 13, and also teaches kindergarten in nearby Brighton. Fox's musical background stems from a love of folk classics and more contemporary music and playing for her class.

Fox is bringing her highly participatory, family-folk tunes to the this Saturday, Feb. 12 at 10:30 a.m. to “encourage people to got some warmth and welcome Spring,” according to Fox.

Fox, along with drummer and friend, Pat Tambor, will be playing a range of music including a few covers, most notably the fan favorite, Ben Harper's “With My Own Two Hands.”

What sets Fox and Tambor apart from other family-friendly entertainment is the fact that parents seem to get as much enjoyment out of her shows as do their children.

“I think the thing people always comment on is that the parents like my songs because of my overall style. I'm influenced by a huge range of music. REM, the Talking Heads, Joni Mitchell, I love old folk and indie music,” said Fox.

Originally, Fox went from playing in her classroom, to the bars and clubs in Boston, focusing more on adult audiences. It wasn't until a friend recommended she come and play a children's event with her soothing folk-rock that Fox began to mix her personal life and burgeoning career as a musician.

“I used to play more for grown-ups, like at Toad's in Porter Square, or the Book Celler around there, and in other coffee houses in the Boston-area. But once I started playing for children, I knew it was for me,” she said.

Fox is currently working on her third CD entitled, Planet Clementine which will drop sometime this fall.
