Why Friedman is Running for Donnelly's Seat

The Chief of Staff for the late Sen. Ken Donnelly speaks on why she ultimately decided to run

The following was submitted by Cindy Friedman:

Since Senator Ken Donnelly’s death, I have been inundated with questions about whether I would run for the seat he so ably occupied. Among those posing these questions were Ken’s family, closest friends, colleagues in the senate, and others who knew of our close working relationship and friendship.

I have been Ken’s Chief of Staff since he was elected a senator ten years ago. Because of the personal impact of this loss, the idea of jumping into a contest was daunting.

Ultimately I chose to run because of my intense commitment to our shared vision, values, and to the work Ken allowed me to participate in shaping.

My background as a public school teacher, manager of hardware and software development groups, community activist and parent, and Chief of Staff has given me an understanding of the issues that matter to Massachusetts and the experience to make a difference in the Senate. I understand the needs of the people of the 4th Middlesex District and helped resolve their problems. I worked with Ken to increase access to transportation and support for district schools and local governments. I drafted and lobbied for legislation to protect workers and their families and ensure a living wage and affordable benefits; to provide homeless children with early access to shelter; to increase access to services for and reduce the criminalization of those suffering from severe and debilitating mental illness and substance use disorders; to reform our criminal justice system; and to increase the availability of workforce training to meet the needs of businesses and increase the economic stability of our residents.

I hope the people of the 4th Middlesex District will allow me to continue and expand the important work we’ve done, honoring the legacy of a man who led so well and cared so deeply.
