Here's the Scoop: National Ice Cream Day this Sunday

President Ronald Reagan signed a resolution into law in 1984 proclaiming July as “National Ice Cream Month” and the third Sunday in July as “National Ice Cream Day”. He recognized ice cream as a fun and nutritious food.

Celebrate “National Ice Cream Day” on Sunday, July 19, 2015. Not to be confused with “Ice Cream For Breakfast Day” the first Saturday of February or “National Ice Cream Sandwich Day” in August.

Summer time is the perfect time for ice cream. Below are just a few of the special events to celebrate this day. Check with your local ice cream shop to see if they will be offering any specials.

Friendly’s is celebrating National Ice Cream Day on Sunday, July 19. All Friendly’s restaurant locations will offer a special $1.99 buy one, get one free offer that includes a single scoop of ice cream served in either a cone or in a dish.

Cold Stone Creamery’s My Cold Stone Club (free rewards club) can get a free ice cream “creation” with the purchase of one.

Sue’s Hot Fudge Sauce

Original recipe makes 1 quart

• 1 cup butter
• 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
• 3 cups white sugar
• 1 (12 fluid ounce) canevaporated milk
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Combine butter, cocoa, sugar and evaporated milk in a saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a boil and boil for 7 minutes. Remove from heat; stir in vanilla. Carefully pour hot mixture into a blender and blend for 2 to 4 minutes. Serve immediately. Store in refrigerator.
