Malden Catholic Too Much for Arlington Lacrosse

Spy Ponders fall 12-2 to out-of-league power

The Arlington High boys' lacrosse team matched Malden Catholic, 2-2, in the first quarter Monday before the visitors superior skills took over, according to Spy Ponders coach Daniel Gardner.

"When we come into these games, we can bring enough energy to play really well for 12 minutes," he said, "but developmentally, our skills are just not where they need to be, our opponent was just further along than we were."

The Spy Ponders (2-12) would let in the next 10 goals, falling to Malden Catholic (10-5), the No. 2 team in the Catholic Conference, by a final of 12-2.

Malden Catholic senior attacker Dominic Roberto led the Lancers with six goals and one assist.

Gardner said he was pleased with the play of defensemen Tom Sullivan, John Holowitz and Joe Keefe, who had the tough task of stopping a potent Lancer offense.

"Even though they got a little beat, 12 goals is normal in lacrosse, and they played well against a very good team," he said.

Behind them, Marty Gorman made 11 saves in net.

"Game in and out, he's not only one of the best players on our team, he's one of the best players on the field," Gardner said.

Down 1-0 in the first, Arlington's Jim Rose tied the game at the 3:30 mark with a long-range blast. Then, less than a minute later, attacker Doug Richardson scored with defenders draped all over him, giving the Spy Ponders a 2-1 lead.

Arlington got six more shots on goal but could never find the nylon. Pat O'Neill, Matt Curran, Jake Palmer, Conor Douggan and face-off specialist Sean Fagan also had solid games for the home team.

The Spy Ponders return to Dual County League action at 5:30 p.m. today, when they host Bedford.
