National Grid to Issue $1.5 Million in Credits to Overcharged Gas Customers

National Grid's service area covers numerous communities across the commonwealth, including Arlington.

ARLINGTON, MA — National Grid will be issuing over $1.5 million in credits to customers who were wrongfully charged a more expensive rate for gas service, following an agreement with the Attorney General's office.

AG Maura Healey announced Wednesday that more than 4,500 National Grid customers were incorrectly charged the company's more expensive non-heating rate instead of the less expensive heating rate. Additionally, the company was ordered to improve its processes to ensure customers are charged the correct rate, and establish a process to confirm whether new customers will be using gas for heating.

Arlington is one of the numerous communities across the Commonwealth within National Grid, Boston Gas's service area.

“As the ratepayer advocate for Massachusetts, we want to ensure that utilities are not overcharging their customers,” said Healey in a statement. “With this agreement, thousands of customers who paid too much for their gas usage will receive the credit they deserve, and National Grid will take additional measures to help prevent this in the future.”

Residential customers who use gas to heat their homes typically pay a lower rate to those who do not use gas to heat their homes. Customers who believe that they are not being charged the correct rate should contact their gas company.
