An Arlington police officer responded to Mass. Ave. and Medford Street in Arlington Center at about 2:15 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, for a report of a fight in progress.

There, a man standing on Medford Street told the officer that a man in a Boston Bruins shirt tried to stab him with a knife. He said the man took off in a green Ford.

The officer spotted the vehicle on Medford Street and attempted to pull it over near Hamlet Street – however, the suspect refused to stop at first, turning right onto Parallel Street, right onto Newton Road and then right onto Hamlet Street before stopping, according to police.

Due to the report of the knife, the officer ordered the suspect out of the vehicle and onto the ground at gunpoint, police said. Once another officer responded to the scene, the suspect was handcuffed and taken into custody. Police allegedly recovered a knife from the vehicle.

The suspect, Timothy Harrington, 49, of Haverhill Street, Andover, was arrested and charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery and failure to stop for police, according to police.

Later, the victim told police that Harrington, who he does not know, came up to him unprovoked and began screaming at him in Arlington Center. He said Harrington chased him into Medford Street where he kicked him and then pulled out the knife and tried to stab him multiple times. Two witnesses yelled at Harrington to stop, and he then fled to his vehicle and drove away, according to police.
