Post 39 Can't Contain Sudbury Bats

Arlington Legion falls behind early and never threatens in 10-2 loss.

The Sudbury bats struck early and often on Monday night, pounding three home runs off of Arlington pitchers en route to a 10-2 win at Feeley Field in Sudbury.

Sudbury took control of the game with a five-run second inning. The big blow came off the bat of Matt Tatkow, who hit a three-run home run to center field to give Sudbury a commanding 5-0 lead.

"There were some well hit balls," said Arlington manager Joe Sancinito of the home runs. "We get lucky we get to play without a fence in our park.  You see some well-struck balls that are caught at our place. They hit the ball well. I don't know if it was the humid air or whatever it is, but just some well struck baseballs."

Sudbury would add another run in the third inning off of Arlington starting pitcher Dan Csaplar, who gave up six runs in three innings of work, to make it 6-0.

"His arm was a little sore," said Sancinito. "He started the game and said he felt all right. As the game went on, he said his arm and shoulder were feeling a little sore."

Arlington got on the scoreboard in the fourth when Alex Finigan crushed a solo home run to deep center field, but couldn't muster much else on offense the rest of the way.

"You can't hit a five-run home run," said Sancinito, who thought his team maintained the right approach at the plate even after falling behind early. "You've got to go out there, get on base, and let the next guy do his job. Move them along, get them in, and chip away when you get down by five runs or more."

David Baer homered twice for Sudbury. His two-run shot in the fourth made it 8-1 and he added a solo homer in the sixth to make it 10-1.

Arlington (4-6) was unable to build on Sunday's thrilling come-from-behind win against Hudson, but will have a chance to get back on the field on Tuesday and Wednesday to regain some momentum.

"It's nice to be able to play back-to-back like that," said Sancinito. "To play this type of game today, the best cure for that is to come back tomorrow and play again."

Arlington hosts Tyngsboro on Tuesday and Wakefield on Wednesday before getting a four-day break for the Fourth of July holiday weekend.
