Post 39 Gets Walloped by Weston

Arlington American Legion goes down 12-2 on the road

The Arlington Legion baseball team ran into a relentless Weston offense Saturday that scored multiple runs in four of the first five innings and added another in the sixth for a 12-2 win.

Arlington (3-5), the away team, was blanked by pitcher Mike Mussafer until a two-out, two-run rally in the sixth inning.

Arlington skipper Joe Sancinito said Weston (7-2), which features players from Weston and Wellesley high schools, as well as catholic and private schools, is just a good all-around baseball team.

"They play the game well," he said. "They play good sound baseball, and they execute what they need to do to get wins."

Down 11-0 in the sixth inning, Arlington's bats finally came alive. Catcher Rob Shea, of Arlington High School, laced a ball to right field to score Dan Csaplar, who walked earlier in the inning. The next batter, left fielder Bobby Alexander, then had an identical hit to score Shea.

Dave Mazza, Sean Gustin, Mitch Coiley and Rob Caggiano also had hits for Arlington.

Weston piled on runs with a steady diet of singles and smart baseball. The team had 13 hits, 12 singles and one double, three walks and three hit batters, and moved runners over with a number of key sacrifices.

They scored three in the first inning, three in the third, two in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth. They also played error-free baseball behind Mussafer, of the Noble and Greenough School, who went the distance.

"[Mussafer] threw the ball really well," Sancinito said of the lefty hurler. "He made his pitches; he got groundballs, fly-outs when he needed them."

Gustin started for Arlington, giving up seven runs, three earned, in three innings of work. Caggiano and Josh Balder pitched in relief.

Sancinito said he hopes his team can turn it around today against Hudson.

"Right now, we're in a little bit of a rut," he said, "but that comes and goes with the season."

Today's game is at Spy Pond Field at 11 a.m.
