Red Cross Seeks Blood Donations During Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Arlington's Blood Drive

246,600 cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed this year and patients may need blood products during treatments, the Red Cross says.

ARLINGTON, MA — October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and the American Red Cross is pushing for donations during the month.

According to an American Red Cross statement, 246,600 cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed, according to the American Cancer Society. Patients may be in need of blood products during chemotherapy, surgery or treatment for complications.

Donors of all blood types are needed, and the Red Cross must collect about 14,00 blood donations every day to help patients.

There will be a blood drive on Oct. 29 at Cavalry Church on Mass. Avenue in Arlington from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Blood donors must be at least 17 years old, or at least 16 years old with parental consent. They must also be healthy and feeling well and weigh at least 110 pounds. Donors must also not have donated blood in the last 56 days.

To make an appointment to give blood, download the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). Donors are encouraged to make appointments and complete the RapidPass online health history questionnaire at redcrossblood.org/rapidpass to save time when donating.
