State Offers Rebate on Old Refrigerators

Earning $50 never looked so easy.

MassSave, along with NStar and National Grid are offering a $50 rebate to those who have a second, working refrigerator/freezer they are willing to recycle for the rest of this calendar year. The program ends December 31.

Each year, a second refrigerator or freezer in the basement or garage can cost around $150 just to run, according to NStar.

MassSave will arrange for pick up.

"It is important to recycle because old refrigerators and freezers typically use three times more electricity than newer models," says the release.

MassSave has the following requirements:

• The refrigerator or freezer must be clean and empty on the day of pick up, and in working condition.
• The unit must meet the size requirement which is 10 cu ft - 30 cu ft.
• You must have an active electric account with MASS SAVE program sponsor at the address where you would like us to pick up the refrigerator/freezer (NStar, National Grid, and Western Massachusetts Electric).
• There is a limit of two (2) units per customer address per calendar year.
• You must provide clear and safe access to your appliances for the removal team. The contractor will not risk injury or be able to move personal effects or modify your home (e.g.: remove door or railings) to remove the unit(s).
