During storm events, rainwater flows along the street gutter and into the storm drain system through grates on top of catch basins. Debris such as leaves and litter can be carried with the rainwater and accumulate on top of the catch basin grates. This prevents water from properly entering the Town's drainage system and increases the risk of street flooding. It is therefore important to keep catch basin grates clear.

There are over 3,000 catch basins in Arlington. While the Arlington Department of Public Works regularly schedules and completes catch basin cleanings, it is not possible to clear every catch basin grate prior to a storm event. The DPW therefore asks residents and business owners to help reduce the risk of localized street flooding by adopting a catch basin in their neighborhood to monitor and clear as needed. It is recommended to clear debris from the catch basin grate prior to a storm event when possible and to dispose of it appropriately in the garbage or with yard waste. Monitoring of the catch basin is also recommended throughout the storm event as additional debris may clog the grates.

The Town thanks residents and businesses for their attentiveness and cooperation during storm events.
