The Medford Street parklet is getting an upgrade. This popular public space will be enhanced with new furnishings that include seating, umbrellas, and plantings. The parklet has been an overall success since its installation in the fall of 2020 and was identified for equipment upgrades due to its frequent usage and its place of prominence on busy Medford Street. A section of Park Terrace will continue to be closed to vehicle traffic to accommodate the outdoor seating area and pedestrian plaza.

The Department of Planning and Community Development is pleased to announce it has received a third grant from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) Shared Streets and Spaces Grant Program to fund these improvements. The Shared Streets and Spaces Program is intended to support projects that promote public health, safe mobility, and renewed commerce by quickly providing new or repurposed space for socially-distanced walking, bicycling, dining, retail, and bus travel. The grant award for this third round is $50,000.

This project will be implemented as soon as the new equipment is received. The installations will remain in place until late fall 2021, at which point they will be disassembled and stored until the spring of 2022. Not sure what a parklet is?
