Water Main Break Diverts Traffic from Mass. Ave.

A major water main break at about 10:15 a.m. has shut down Mass. Ave in both directions for a five block span.

"Mass. Ave. is shut down, detoured at Appleton and Richardson," said Captain Robert Bongiorno of the Arlington Police Department. "The Arlington Department of Public Works is out there assessing it, but as of now, we have no idea when traffic or the water to the area will be restored."

The detour affects all traffic, including pedestrian and bus.

Bongiorno was on his way to assess, but said from what he heard, the street was in "pretty bad shape" and it was affecting businesses, though he was not yet sure how many or to what degree.
