Week in Review

July 19 - 25 saw a water main break, a bus shelter meeting and an important subcommittee meeting.

It was a quiet summer week in Arlington this week, replete with warm weather and humidity.

The Arlington School Committee's Policies and Procedures Subcommittee met on Tuesday evening and put forth a proposal for a new Pledge of Allegiance policy that will .

High School Senior Sean Harrington and the Arlington Public Schools were thrust into the national spotlight in June after the School Committee deadlocked on Harrington's request reinstate the Pledge of Allegiance at Arlington High School at their June 22 meeting.

Also in school news, Superintendent Kathleen Bodie announced that Steven Silvestri will serve as the interim principal at Bishop Elementary School for the 2010-2011 school year after Steven Carme, who has been the principal for many  years, officially retires over the summer.

Also on Tuesday, a water main break in the Heights diverted traffic from Mass. Ave. for 12 hours. The raod opened again late Tuesday evening, but the work continued through the week.

On Thursday afternoon a fire broke out at 1379 Mass Ave. at Tam Yum Koong in Arlington. The fire, reportedly in the walls of the establishment, broke out at approximately 4:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon and no injuries were reported.

In sports news, Arlington's Daniel Brennan headed to the All-American Soap Box Derby on Saturday, July 24 and the Senior Ruth Cardinals had a big win against Winchester on Wednesday evening.
