Week in Review

The week's biggest news came from the Arlington School District, which announced Thursday that it had a $1.5 million deficit to close fiscal year 2010.

Administrators said the shortfall is due to a decline in expected revenues and an increase in out-of-district special education costs.

Later that night, at a special School Committee meeting, members asked administrators for more budget clarity throughout the year. At that same meeting, members denied a request from Superintendent Kathleen Bodie that would've added a fourth kindergarten teacher at Brackett Elementary School in order to reduce class sizes.

The schools also got some good news, as Gov. Deval Patrick announced earlier in the week that designated to the state. The Arlington High School and Arlington Catholic football teams also returned to practice Monday, while most other fall sports began Thursday.

In other news, mosquito samples collected in Arlington on July 15 and August 19 tested positive for West Nile Virus, according to the state Department of Public Health.

An Arlington man, Laurence C. Weber, 66, was also , according to the U.S. attorney's office. Other police activity included a dispute between neighbors on Ronald Road involving a garden hose and hedge trimmers.
