Week in Review July 12 - 18

It was a week of concerns over dogs and mosquitoes and suprising sports losses punctuated by surprising stories from the daily police log.

On Monday night, the Board of Selectmen met. Among the issues discussed, such as parking at the Capitol Theatre, they also heard the results of a dog hearing. Though the Board decided 4 - 1 to follow the recommendations Captain Robert Bongiorno of the Arlington Police Department put forth after the hearing, the discussion turned sour when dog owner Janice Woo accused the board of prejudicial behavior toward her dog's alleged breed.

Meanwhile, the police log registered concerns over locking car doors at night, drunk driving incidents and an incident at Massage Envy on Massachusetts Avenue between two co-workers where one used her high heel as a weapon against the other.

In sports news, tennis ace Matt Lipinski was upset in a surprising twist and afternoon rain storms stopped a couple games from being played.

Later in the week, the Arlington Land Trust entered into an purchase and sales agreement for Elizabeth Island in Spy Pond. This will help protect the island going forward.

On July 16, the Massachusetts Department of Health confirmed that West Nile virus had ben found in Arlington mosquitoes. Though this happens most years, it was still "a bit earlier than usual," said Christine Connolly of the Arlington Board of Health, which released a list of precautions for Arlingtonians.
