Attleboro Girls Lose Hard-Fought Game

The Attleboro High School girls varsity basketball team gave its best shot Tuesday night, but fell short in a 57-52 loss to Foxboro.

Attleboro's Kirsten Terrien opened the scoring for the AHS team with a 3, followed by a Kerri Beland basket. Foxboro didn't get on the scoreboard until 5:31 and 2 from the free throw line by Beland and another from the floor by Kerri gave the girls in blue a 9-4 lead. Foxboro scored the next five points, tying the score until a shot by Runey from behind the arc gave Attleboro a 12-9 lead. Foxboro tied the score with a three but Beland again was fouled and was successful from the free throw line, putting Attleboro ahead, 14-12. This was the last time the Bombardiers held the lead and the quarter ended with Foxboro having the advantage, 16-14.

Beth Clifton opened up the scoring in the second eight minute segment, knotting the score at 16 all. Foxboro went on a mini run, scoring the next 7 points until Clifton hit again. A lane violation negated a successful Attleboro free throw but another 3 by Muney, followed by a Clifton basket brought Attleboro to within 2 points of the Foxboro lead. The half ended 28-23, Foxboro.

Again Attleboro opened up the scoring in the third quarter on a basket by Bri LaPlume. Clifton followed with another hoop but the Warriors had increased their lead to 7 and then built it to 11 points, before another 3 by Runey and two free throws by LaPlume cut the Foxboro lead to 6. In spite of a hoop by Beland, as the quarter ended the score stood at 40-36, with Attleboro on the short end.

In the early seconds of the fourth quarter LaPlume was fouled and was successful on her two free throws.  The teams exchanged hoops, with Foxboro scoring from the floor and Attleboro, from the charity stripe.  Muney missed a free throw but a lane violation by the Warriors gave her another opportunity and she was successful.  A free throw by Beland and another by LaPlume gave Attleboro a much needed spark.  Sophomore Emily Houle came off the bench and ignited that spark, with a putback , followed by two LaPlume free throws.  Back to back baskets by Houle accounted for the next 5 Attleboro points and a free throw by Beland brought the Bombardiers to within 4. 

With time running out the girls in blue were forced to put Foxboro on the free throw line.  Three successful shots from the charity stripe gave the Warriors a 57-50 lead. A basket by Beland, at the buzzer, ended the game, 57-52. 

Kerri Beland led the team in scoring with 14 points.

Kim Runey contributed 11 points and 6 rebounds.  Bri LaPlume had 9 points and 9 rebounds(7-8 from the free throw line.) Beth Clifton played her usual strong game at both ends of the court and chipped in with 8 points.  Emily Houle had 7 points, all coming in the final quarter, and pulled down 6 rebounds.

The Bombardiers will entertain Franklin at home Friday at 6:30 p.m. The AHS record now stands at 7-4.

The Attleboro freshmen lost, 42-22 and the junior varsity did as well, 34-31.  Karissa Hand led the jv’s with 11 points and Olivia Kass had 10.
