HILL-ROBERTS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN ATTLEBORO, MA JOINS WITH SCHOOLS AROUND THE WORLD IN THE BIGGEST SUMMER CHALLENGE EVER!
Students log reading minutes in an attempt to set a new WORLD RECORD IN READING
Attleboro, MA, September 22, 2015 – This past summer, Hill-Roberts Elementary School (HRE) students joined thousands of schools worldwide in trying to set a new world record for reading. They participated in the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge, a global literacy program designed to prevent summer reading loss by encouraging kids to read for the world record. Last year, kids from all 50 states and 29 countries around the world read 304,749,681 minutes.
During the summer-long challenge, Hill-Roberts students competed for top reading honors with schools around the world by logging as many reading minutes as possible from May 4 through September 4, 2015. Through their combined efforts, as a school, Hill-Roberts’ students read 409,683 minutes; they were the #2 school in Massachusetts; and #102 out of 6,637 schools that participated worldwide! The top readers at HRE will be recognized at a school assembly this Friday.
“The Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge is a great way to encourage our students to read as much as possible during the summer months, while giving them a fun incentive to compete against other schools across the country,” said Julie Cotsalas, school librarian; “our goal was to expose more kids to the joy of reading and, of course, we also wanted to try to make it into the Scholastic Book of World Records top 20.”
About the Program
Now in its ninth year, the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge is a free reading program dedicated to stopping the “Summer Slide” and encouraging kids to read more books this summer. Kids are invited to log their reading minutes at scholastic.com/summer or on their mobile devices, enter the sweepstakes to win prizes, and earn digital rewards when they complete weekly reading challenges.

- Free program materials for teachers and parents, including daily reading tips, bookmarks, and booklists for Spanish language speakers are available at scholastic.com/summer.
