WOUND MANAGEMENT SERVICES AT STURDY MEMORIAL HOSPITAL

RECOGNIZES FOOT HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH

Wound Management Services (WMS) at Sturdy Memorial Hospital recognizes Foot Health Awareness Month, which is celebrated annually in April. Sponsored by the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA), the purpose of Foot Health Awareness Month is to encourage Americans to inspect their feet and ankles for any injuries or skin problems.

WMS recommends seeking medical attention if a wound does not stop bleeding; becomes red and/or hot to the touch; if pain increases; if there is any change in drainage (smells, increases, etc.); or if you develop a fever. Wounds should start to show signs of significant healing within the first two weeks. If there are no signs of healing or wound has not healed completely within six weeks, advanced wound care may be necessary. WMS staff offer wound prevention tips:

· Wear proper fitting shoes.

· Regularly use a moisturizing cream or lotion on the skin.

· Maintain control of diabetes and blood glucose levels.

If you notice that you have a wound, immediately contact your health care provider. Neglected wounds can result in infection, or in severe cases, amputation.
