Our Art Ourselves: Muslim Women Artists Explore their Hybrid Identities

Art offers a unique prism for understanding the social forces currently transforming Middle Eastern societies. The latest installment of AIC-WorldBoston’s Muslim Women Series spotlights three female artists whose work grapples with their hybrid selves.

With her youth divided between the US and Saudi Arabia, ground breaking painter Nada Farhat explores her bisected roots through award-winning work that has been displayed at both Aramco Hospital in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia and New England Medical Center.

Kuwaiti poet Mona Kareem is beset by a particular alienation: she is a native of Kuwait yet denied citizenship. She explores this existence in limbo through her writing.

For many years Niloofar Ziae taught drawing and painting in Tehran, helping young Persians express themselves despite a pervasive culture of censorship. Her own art explores scenes in Tehran and Boston, which she now calls home.
