10 Great White Sharks Spotted Off Cape Cod In 24 Hours

Three Cape Cod beaches were recently closed due to great white shark sightings.

CAPE COD, MA — After a weekend that saw three Cape Cod beaches temporarily close due to shark activity near the shore, 10 great white sharks were spotted off the coast in 24 hours. According to the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy's Sharktivity app, four were seen Monday and six were seen Tuesday morning.

One of the sharks recorded was a tagged shark named Snowflake. The majority of those seen Tuesday were on the Atlantic Ocean side of the Cape, while the four spotted Monday were in Cape Cod Bay.

Shark sightings forced the brief closures of Head of the Meadow Beach and Coast Guard Beach in Truro and Nauset Beach in Orleans Saturday.

Meanwhile officials on Cape Cod have been examining ways to keep sharks away from beaches and better address bites in the wake of two attacks on people last summer. Nauset Beach last month received first aid materials used to immediately respond to a shark attack.

Consulting firm Woods Hole Group is evaluating advanced safety methods such as sonar buoys, drones and nets. A final report is expected to be released in September.
