10 Questions with Klub Kidz Owner Lori Dutra

The kids call her Miss Lori--adults can call her amazing.

10 Questions, Shoot!

Q: What did you dream of being as a kid?

I always wanted to be involved with politics as a youngster and in High School. Can you even believe it? LOL

Q: How does your personality play into your business?

Being involved with children, my outgoing personality is a plus. Children also require that I be loving, patient, understanding and fun. Thanks to having my own two children, and dealing with many ups and downs, I feel they have helped me to cultivate those qualities.

Q: At what moment did you decide to open a business?

Originally my goal was to become a Pediatric Physical Therapist. I had been working in Geriatrics at the time, when I became pregnant. I had difficulties and had to put my schooling on the back burner. After my daughter was born, I joined a local gym and began working in the babysitting room. When it would become too crowded, I'd take the children into the studio and play games with them. When parents began asking me to do their child's birthday parties, and other gyms and schools asked me to teach for them, I realized that I'd “found” what I LOVED to do! Klub Kidz was born, and I've been doing kids' classes and parties ever since!

Q: What inspired you?

My mom! She is the most incredible woman!! She taught ages Preschool to High School, and raised 5 daughters – 3 biological and 2 adopted. She still takes foster children in. She has a way with children that is truly a gift! If I can become ½ of the teacher, mom, and woman that she is, I'll be blessed!

Q: Describe the biggest challenge of owning a business in the town of Barnstable?

Because I travel to different towns and locations with my business, I find it hard to accommodate parents' needs and wishes. I am in Barnstable twice a week – Tuesdays & Thursdays. I wish my schedule would allow me to be here more often.

Q: Describe the best thing about owning a business in the town of Barnstable?

First, I love the diversity of families in Barnstable. We have Indian, White, Polish, Brazilian, Portuguese, Asian, Czech, (and more) families in our classes. I've been inspired to learn Spanish! Second, I'm so honored to be able to teach at the Hyannis Youth & Community Center! What a wonderful facility and amazing staff! They have opened their hearts to me and the kiddos who attend classes there. I've made lasting friendships!

Q: What is one thing you would never change about your business?

I don't think I'll ever settle down to just one location. I love being able to travel all over the Cape: Barnstable, Mashpee, Sandwich, (soon to Falmouth), and Plymouth. I love meeting the families and staff wherever I go!

Q: What is your business’ greatest asset?

I believe it is my true LOVE & CARE for the children I work with. I absolutely grow attached to them, and I know they know it! It makes a difference to parents when they can see that a teacher truly cares about their child. As a mother, I know that's true.

Q: What is your favorite spot in town?

I love eating steamers at Spanky's with my husband, and walking Main Street, in the summer. I look forward to it ALL WINTER LONG! I also love watching the sun set from the upstairs of Tugboats.

Q: What’s one thing the community should know about you?

I want the community to know that my heart is for their children. I love to volunteer for children's fundraisers and community events. I am blessed to have so many wonderful families in my classes, and I like to give back to those who are less fortunate.
