2 Dogs Killed In Barnstable Fire

The fire engulfed 40 percent of the Cotuit house causing significant damage and killing two dogs.

BARNSTABLE, MA — Two dogs were killed in a house fire Monday afternoon on Trout Brook Road in Cotuit.

Just before 4:30 p.m., fire officials were called to the house after a neighbor reported seeing smoke coming from a home in the 100th block of the road.

Upon arrival, a firefighter saw smoke coming out the first floor window and entered the home. Cotuit fire officials said no residents were in the home, but their two dogs were. Firefighters got the dogs out of the house and tried to resuscitate them but were unsuccessful.

Fire Chief Paul Rhude in a statement said the fire engulfed 40 percent of the house. Crews were able to extinguish the flames, but the fire caused major structural, smoke and heat damage.

Firefighters from Cotuit, Marstons Mills, West Barnstable, Centerville and Mashpee assisted at the scene, while Sandwich provided coverage at the Cotutit Fire Department and Hyannis fire provided coverage in Marstons Mills and Osterville.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
