7th OUI Charge For Cape Cod Man Who Nearly Hit Cruiser: Police

The officer pulled the 62-year-old over after they nearly collided on Rt. 28, police said.

BARNSTABLE, MA – A Centerville man is facing his seventh drunken driving charge after nearly hitting a Barnstable police cruiser, according to police. Around 7 p.m. on Dec. 19, an officer was passing through the intersection of Rt. 28 and Phinney's Lane when he "narrowly avoided" a collision with a black 2008 Nissan Sentra.

The officer pulled the Nissan over for failing to yield to the right-of-way, police said. The driver, 62-year-old Edward Flanagan, showed "numerous signs of intoxication" and was placed under arrest based on the results of field sobriety tests, according to police.

Two open containers of alcohol were also found under the driver's seat, according to police.

"Further investigation revealed Flanagan’s driver’s license to be revoked as a result of previous OUI convictions, and this most recent arrest was the seventh time (4 previous arrests in Florida and 2 in Massachusetts) Flanagan had been arrested for OUI," police said in a statement.

Flanagan was charged with his seventh OUI offense, operating with a revoked license, failure to yield at an intersection, operating to endanger and operating with an open container.
