9 Beached Dolphins Found On Cape Cod, Rescuers Save 5
Two of the dolphins died, including a calf, while another two swam away when the tide came in.
BREWSTER, MA — Nine dolphins found themselves stranded on Cape Cod beaches during low tide Monday, according to the International Fund for Animal Welfare.
IFAW officials said they rescued five of the dolphins, but two of the dolphins died, including a calf. The other two dolphins were able to swim away on their own when the tide came in. The first rescue attempt came around 7 a.m., at Ellis Landing in Brewster. Officials with the IFAW found a mother and her calf stranded there. The calf already died before the rescue crew arrived, an IFAW spokesperson told the Boston Herald.
Later that day, the IFAW received a report that seven dolphins were stranded off Lieutenant Island in Wellfleet. IFAW officials told the Boston Globe two of the dolphins escaped to deeper waters, but another one died. The remaining four, plus the mother dolphin from Brewster, were taken to Provincetown in the group's custom-built mobile clinic and were later released at Herring Cove Beach.
