Steve Meachum, a housing activist from City Life, will be addressing the Occupy Cape Cod/Hyannis general assembly on Friday, Dec. 16 at 4:30. 

City Life/Vida Urbana is a 38-year-old bilingual, community organization whose mission is to fight for racial, social and economic justice and gender equality by building working class power through direct action, coalition building, education and advocacy. In organizing poor and working class people of diverse race and nationalities, we promote individual empowerment, develop community leaders, and are building a movement to effect systemic change and transform society.

Our roots are in promoting tenant rights and preventing housing displacement. In response to the devastating impact of the foreclosure crisis on communities in Boston, we launched a major campaign in 2007, the Post-Foreclosure Eviction Defense campaign to help keep people facing foreclosure in their homes.

Victories won by hundreds of organized families have created public and political pressure which is driving legislative reform and has inspired the emergence of similar campaigns across the region. 

In 2011, a lead grant from the Open Society Foundations’ Neighborhood Stabilization Initiative has made it possible for us to expand this effort beyond Boston.

We are now working closely with groups in four other cities and towns within Massachusetts and Rhode Island that have begun to replicate this model. Through regional and national presentations and trainings, CL/VU is extending its impact. 

CL/VU maintains its core commitment to movement building and working across issues through staff and members’ active participation in numerous peace and justice coalitions.

National Homeless Persons Memorial Day /Occupy Cape Cod Wednesday, 12/21/11Calvary Baptist Church, 25 Lincoln Road, Hyannis   

Over 100 cities across America put on a homeless memorial event on Wednesday, 12/21 to memorialize the deaths of homeless women and men.The memorial service will be held at the Hyannis Federated Church on 12/21 at 5:30 PM.  Prior to the service, a press conference will be held at noon at the Calvary Baptist Church.  

Alan Burt, the coordinator of the event for the past 11 years, is looking for speakers to participate. In addition to the press conference, tents will be set up in front of the church. Occupy Cape Cod/Hyannis has organized for an art installation, “No Room At The Inn” and plans for tents to include a food pantry tent, free clothing exchange tent, library, and interactive activities.  

We are also calling for others to organize and join in by setting up tents.  Alan has suggested that tents be set up Tuesday.  One does not have to sleep overnight in order to have a tent.  

A number of us will stay, expressing ‘We Understand, We Care’.  The church will be open if it get too cold.  Usually they socialize until 11 or 12.  Occupy Cape Cod would like to extend the vigil for another night.  Alan would like a lot of tents and people to be at the Calvary Baptist at noon for the press conference and interviews. We could also use a small committe to plan soup and sandwiches and coffee the next morning. We need volunteers for food, clothing, books, and to join in for the event.
