Joyce Groemmer and Barbara Braman featured artists through January, 13th, 2012 Artwork on Loan program at Barnstable Town Hall

The “Art on Loan” program, highlighting local artists on the meeting room walls in Barnstable Town Hall features the works of Joyce Groemmer and Barbara Braman, December 7^th through January 13^th, 2012.

Barbara and Joyce are longtime friends who use very different mediums to create images that exist somewhere between reality and memory. Joyce uses soft pastel to paint exterior landscapes. Barbara, a digital fine artist, uses her camera and computer to create interior landscapes. Both artists reduce what they see to simple forms and casts of light; capturing not just what our eyes see, but the image that our brain remembers.

Joyce Groemmer’s  current work focuses on landscapes in the medium of soft pastel. Groemmer paints both plein air and from photos, simplifying the landscape to what she considers the most important elements: strong shapes and dramatic light. In doing so she strives to convey what you might “see” in your memory or in a dream.

Joyce on the board of the Pastel Painters of Cape Cod and is an artist-member of the Cape Cod Art Association. She resides in Marstons Mills.

Barbara Braman is fascinated with perception; particularly how human brains receive and store memory and emotion. “The camera does not see what the brain sees...the heart and mind know differently.  The art in taking a photograph resides not just in finding the right settings and framing to communicate the essence of the subject...but the image that our brain remembers, tethered to the cast of light and feeling of that particular moment.  Working from a photograph, I enhance and embellish the ideas and emotions that I find compelling.  The image that results is then perceived neither as a photograph nor as traditional media.  This mysterious quality underscores the connection between what is real, what is remembered, and what is imagined.”
