CAPE COD, MA — In the wake of two deadly fishing boat disasters, another has been averted – with the help of responders from Cape Cod.

The Coast Guard on Wednesday rescued three fishermen 23 miles off the coast of Boothbay Harbor, Maine, according to a news release.

A local Coast Guard station responded around 7 a.m. to a mayday call from 40-foot fishing vessel Vesta Renee, whose crew said the boat was taking on water and that they were preparing to abandon ship.

The rescue is welcome news for the New England fishing community, especially after the sinkings of the Yankee Rose last week and Lily Jean in January. Together, they resulted in nine deaths.

Commercial fishing is one of the most dangerous jobs in the United States – with a fatality rate over 28 times higher than the U.S. average, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.
