BARNSTABLE, MA — There are 161 people who have tested positive for the new coronavirus in the town of Barnstable as of Tuesday, according to the latest numbers from local health officials.

Board of Health Director Thomas McKean said nurses with the Public Health Division have checked in with infected residents to ensure they remain in isolation. They have also reached out to those who have been in contact with these residents to make sure they self-quarantine.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health reported that as of Tuesday afternoon, more than 58,000 people in the state have tested positive for the virus, and 3,153 have died. The cases include 820 residents of Barnstable County.

All residents are urged to social distance by maintaining a minimum of 6 feet from others while out in public including while shopping at grocery stores wherever possible, to limit exposure to others.

Town officials said Public Health Division staff have continue to respond to complaints and have routinely contacted managers of supermarkets and other businesses in Barnstable to give guidance and assistance with social distancing procedures. Signage, barriers, markings, and Plexiglas shields have been installed.
