BARNSTABLE, MA — The 2019 Barnstable election will see eight candidates compete for four of the Town Council's 13 seats. Two of the four races are open races, following the death of Town Council president Jim Crocker. Town Councilor James Tinsley cannot seek re-election because Barnstable's council has term limits of six two-year terms.

Races for School Committee and Housing Authority will not be contested.

To help you prepare for Election Day, Patch has put together a voting guide to help you pick candidates and find your nearest polling location — plus other pertinent election information.

Former District 5 Councilor Jim Crocker died Oct. 18, and his name will also appear on the ballot. His name can't be removed from the ballot because his name had already been printed on absentee ballots. Town officials cannot recall ballots if voting has already begun.

All votes for Crocker will be recorded as a tribute, according to town officials. If Crocker wins re-election, the candidate with the next-highest amount of votes will be elected.

Any voter who has already cast an absentee ballot may request a new one by sending a written request to the Town Clerk's office at 367 Main Street, Hyannis, MA 02601.
