Barnstable To Preview Major Sewer Expansion At Public Meeting

The town is preparing to begin construction of new sewer lines that will take three years to install.

BARNSTABLE, MA — The town is holding a public information meeting to discuss plans for a major expansion of sewer service over the next three years.

The project would add sewer lines north of Route 28 near Phinney’s Lane and Wequaquet Lane, then running 2 miles almost as far as Route 132.

Construction would begin this fall and continue through late 2029, according to town documents. Surveying and other preparation for the work got underway a year ago.

The expansion is a key part of Barnstable’s Comprehensive Wastewater Management Plan, and the town council has already budgeted over $1 million to design the expansion. Neighborhood residents now depend on septic tanks and other site-specific methods to deal with wastewater, which the town says has a “negative effect” on Lake Wequaquet and the Centerville River.

At the information meeting, public works officials will lead a presentation about the project and then answer questions. The meeting will also be recorded and later posted online.
