A few weekends ago I had the pleasure of introducing my housemates to a piece of history on the Cape they had never seen before, the Scargo Tower in Dennis Village. The Tower is dated back to 1874 and was originally made of wood. It was rebuilt twice before the present cobblestone version was constructed in 1901.
At thirty feet high, it’s not much of a climb to the top, and the view is great. You can see Scargo Lake and Cape Cod Bay, like in this photo I took from the top. If you’re fortunate enough to be up there on a clear day, you can also see the Pilgrim Monument in Provincetown on your right.
I would recommend visiting the Tower on a wind-free day; the chill definitely detracts from the view! It’s easy to access the Tower if you’re driving along Route 6A in Dennis Village. Once you see Old Bass River Road, continue along until you spot Scargo Hill Road. There is a small sign that announces the Tower’s exact locale.

If you’re in the mood for something sweet, The Ice Cream Smuggler is close to the Scargo Tower. You could grab a coffee heath bar in a cone then head to Mayflower Beach. Or why not pop into the Scargo Café for one of their specialty sandwiches while you’re in the area? This week is an especially smart time to visit the Café as it’s one of forty-plus restaurants participating in this year’s Restaurant Week Cape Cod, from Monday, May 16th through Sunday, May 22nd. Have you made your dinner plans yet?
