BARNSTABLE, MA — Cape Cod saw its first major snowstorm of the season Wednesday night into Thursday morning with some communities getting buried in over 6 inches of snow.

Cape Cod and much of the South Shore had lower snowfall totals than the rest of the state, as rain mixed in with snow. That started happening around the Barnstable area by 8:15 a.m., Thursday.

But forecasters were warning a flash freeze could lead to treacherous driving conditions. State officials reiterated for people to stay home unless it was absolutely necessary to go out.

"If you absolutely don't have to travel tonight or tomorrow, it would be great if you could stay put and let the road crews do what they need to do," Gov. Charlie Baker said Wednesday.
