Cape Cod Bar Manager Out After Video Of Racist Confrontation Sparks Calls For A Boycott

At least one local organization called for a boycott of Trader Ed's after its former manager was captured on video using a racial slur.

HYANNIS, MA — It appears that Trader Ed's manager John Shea is no longer employed by the business after a racist confrontation was captured on video.

In a short Facebook post on Tuesday, the Hyannis Marina, where the business is located, said Shea was no longer in his management position.

This comes after Shea was captured on video confronting a group of people on Thursday and calling at least one of them a racial slur.

Millyan Phillips, the person on the receiving end of the racist outburst, shared additional video with the Cape Cod Times, which reveal the extent of the threats made against him.

In one clip, the Times reports, Shea told Phillips "you'll get shot in the head." In another Shea said Phillips could "end up in a grave."

In the aftermath of the video, locals on social media have stated they plan to stop frequenting the business, and at least one local organization said they would call for a boycott.

"The Barnstable Ally Group is calling for a boycott of Trader Ed’s, an eating and drinking establishment in Hyannis, after a threatening epithet-laced rant by the owner that was caught on camera," the group said. "More details to come."

Local band Sonic Pidgin said on social media the group was in talks to play shows at the establishment this summer, but have since backed out of negotiations because of the video.

A statement from the band is included below:

"We are severely disheartened by the recent news regarding Trader Ed's in Hyannis and its owner. We recently had negotiations with the establishment regarding possible upcoming gigs this summer. However, local friends & news outlets made us aware of a video of a recent incident in which the owner displayed racist and hateful behavior. As a direct result, we have immediately pulled out of any and all negotiations with that establishment. We are a group who believes in kindness, equality, and respect, and we want to continue to promote positivity and inclusion at our shows because that is who we are. Plus, we love our frontman, and he would never treat any of you with anything other than good vibes and a kind heart. We look forward to visiting Cape Cod in a different capacity and playing music for you in a place where all are welcomed and treated with love & respect."
