Popular Historic Walking Tours Return This Summer From the Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum

The Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum announced that the popular historic weekly Walking Tours will begin on July 6, 2016.

Provincetown, Mass. (June 28, 2016) The Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum announced today that the popular historic weekly Walking Tours will begin on July 6, 2016 and continue through August 31, 2016. Starting off from the PMPM, every Wednesday at 9:30 a.m., the walking tours will travel back in time giving visitors a look at the most historic locations and buildings in Provincetown including the Pilgrim Monument, Atlantic House, Benjamin Lancy Mansion and Provincetown Town Hall.

“Provincetown has some of the most significant architecture in New England and our walking tour brings history to life with our knowledgeable guides,” said John McDonagh, PMPM Executive Director. “Each stop on the tour provides visitors with a story encompassing the history behind each building along the way.”

The tour begins with a rich overview of Provincetown history at the PMPM and also the breathtaking 360-degree view of Cape Cod from the top of the Monument. Then, tour ventures into town and stops at different sites and buildings. The tour visits the recently renovated Town Hall to view both the historic building and the paintings in the town’s art collection featuring masterpieces from Charles Hawthorne who founded the Cape Cod School of Art in 1890 and his students, Ross Moffet and Henry Hensche. Tour-goers will also visit the Provincetown Library to see the remarkable half-scale model of the Rose Dorothea and the impressive Lipton Cup she won in the Fishermen’s Race.

The Historic Walking Tour travels around the streets of Provincetown for about two miles and takes two hours. Reservations are required as the popular walking tours fill up quickly. Tickets are $20 per person, which includes tour and PMPM museum/monument admission. The tour includes buildings which are not handicapped accessible. The tour is weather permitting and is not suitable for small children, and no dogs. To reserve your spot for the Historic Walking Tour call 508-487-1310.

The Pilgrim Monument commemorates the first landing of the Mayflower Pilgrims in 1620 in Provincetown Harbor where they wrote and signed the Mayflower Compact, the first written declaration of a democratic commonwealth. At 252-feet, 7.5 inches tall and 353 feet above sea level, it is the tallest all-granite structure in the U.S. and includes 60 ramps and 116 steps. The Monument is designed to resemble Torre Del Mangia, a 14th century tower in Siena, Italy, and is of the Italian Renaissance order of architecture. The Museum collects, preserves, interprets, researches, exhibits, and publishes archival historical materials and exhibit materials depicting important events of Provincetown history.
