Search Is Over For Fisherman Missing After Cape Cod Sinking

PROVINCETOWN, MA — The search is over for a fisherman presumed dead after his boat sank Thursday afternoon, killing another crew-member off Race Point Beach.

Fishing vessel Yankee Rose capsized and had sunk by around 3:30 p.m. yesterday, 3 miles northeast of Provincetown, the Coast Guard said. The body of one fisherman was recovered, and on Friday afternoon the search for a second was suspended.

“After 21 hours of continuous searching by the Coast Guard for the person who went missing after the F/V Yankee Rose capsized at around noon yesterday, the search has been suspended as of 1:27 p.m.,” the Coast Guard said in a statement.

“Despite adverse weather and sea conditions, including freezing temperatures, an active small craft advisory and a gale warning, all available resources were leveraged in the effort to locate the missing mariner.”

The names of the two men have not been released. The Yankee Rose was home-ported in New Bedford.

Commercial fishing is one of the country’s most dangerous occupations. Massachusetts recorded other fishing fatalities just last month, when the Lily Jean and its seven-member crew went down off the coast of Gloucester.
