Suspected Driver In Hyannis Main Street Shooting Held Without Bail

The Rockland man who police said is suspected of driving the vehicle involved in the shooting will be held without bail pending a hearing.

BARNSTABLE, MA — The man police suspect was behind the wheel during the June 25 drive-by shooting on Main Street in Hyannis won't be released on bail, even though officials don't believe he knew one of his passengers was planning to shoot out of his back window.

A Barnstable District Court judge decided on Friday that Chrystian Anderson, 20, of Rockland, Mass., will be held without bail pending a probable cause hearing on Aug. 4.

Anderson faces charges of assault and battery with a firearm, armed assault with the intent to murder by firearm and other related firearms charges.

A teenager who police believe pulled the trigger is currently being held on multiple charges, including two counts of assault to murder with a firearm, assault and battery with a firearm, and accessory before and after the fact.

According to a report from the Cape Cod Times, Cape and Islands Assistant District Attorney Michael Donovan called the shooting "spectacularly brazen" and showed video from buildings around Main Street.

Although Anderson's attorney was unsuccessful in convincing a judge that he be released despite job prospects and a place to stay, even Donovan said he doesn't believe Anderson had prior knowledge of the teen's plan to let off 11 shots on Main Street.

Barnstable police Sgt. Mark Butler told the court that Anderson relayed that the teen asked for a ride to see someone in Hyannis. The teenager sat in the back of the car and eventually rolled down the window and shot at a group of people.

Butler also noted, according to the Times, that all of the people involved in this incident were known to local police except for Anderson.

The teenager was also arraigned for a separate shooting at Craigville Beach recently.

Hyannis Main Street Shooting

Officers responded to the area of Main Street and High School Road in Hyannis for reported gunshots around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday.

When they arrived, police found a man that was shot in both legs. They began treatment on him at the scene.

The victim was taken first to Cape Cod Hospital, but was later flown to a Boston area hospital for treatment on the non-life-threatening injuries.

Additional units also responded, finding a damaged car a short distance away on High School Road. The car likely fled the scene of the shooting and crashed into an uninvolved vehicle, police said.

The passengers in that car were unharmed in the accident.

Police determined that the shooting wasn't a random act of violence and are continuing an investigation.
