Teen Girl Rescued After Sand Dune Collapses On Cape Cod

A 15-year-old girl digging in the sand at a Cape Cod beach became trapped when a sand dune collapsed.

CHATHAM, MA — Firefighters rescued a 15-year-old girl who became trapped up to her neck in sand after a dune collapsed on top of her.

Fire officials said the call came in around 5 p.m., Sunday, when someone reported the dune collapsed on the girl as she was digging a hole on North Beach Island. Dispatchers found the girl using the caller's GPS coordinates.

When emergency officials found the girl, they placed a protective barrier on her to prevent the dune from collapsing more.

After the rescue, the girl was taken by boat to the Chatham fish pier and was evaluated by paramedics. Fire officials said the girl was not inured and didn't need to be taken to the hospital.
