The team from the humpback whale studies program spotted the turtle on Stellwagen Bank. Coastal Studies officials said the turtle was relatively small at 4-feet-long and weighing a few hundred pounds.

"While the turtle was feeding it was oblivious to the world around it, including approaching boats," officials said. "As with whales, boat strikes and entanglement in fishing gear are relatively common for this endangered species, so please keep a sharp look out for them."

Anyone who sees any entangled animals while on the water was asked to call the Center for Coastal Studies hotline at 1-800-900-3622.
