The Massachusetts State Constitution is clear: "The body politic is a social compact whereby all agree to be governed by laws designed for the common good." This compact is built on the principles of transparency, accountability, and participation. Our government is meant to serve us, not the other way around.

On Cape Cod, we face unique challenges that demand effective and responsive governance. From managing our fragile environment to supporting our local economy, we need a government that is transparent, accountable, and responsive to our needs. But all too often, we encounter secrecy, obfuscation, and unresponsiveness.

Take, for example, the recent debates over wind farm projects off our coast. While some hailed these projects as a victory for renewable energy, others raised concerns about their impact on our marine ecosystem and local economy. Yet, the decision-making process was marred by secrecy and a lack of transparency, leaving many feeling disenfranchised and ignored.

Or consider the ongoing struggles of our local businesses and residents to access affordable healthcare. While our state government has made efforts to expand coverage, the process has been marked by confusion, delays, and a lack of clear communication. This lack of transparency has left many feeling frustrated and disconnected from the decision-making process.

The consequences of opaque and unaccountable government are clear. When our government operates in secret, we lose trust. When our voices are ignored, we become disengaged. And when our leaders are not held accountable, we risk corruption and abuse of power.

But there is hope. By demanding open, transparent, and accountable government, we can reclaim our right to participate in the decisions that shape our lives. Here's how:
