“Pucker Up” (79 min.) is a 2005 feature documentary by Kate Davis and David Heilbroner about the men and women who compete for the title of world’s best whistler at the 31st Annual International Whistling Convention in Louisburg, North Carolina. The film follows the efforts of competitors drawn from all walks of life: a turkey hauler who whistles like a bird, an investment banker who does beat box whistling, a man who retired from his job to become a professional whistler, and a social worker who travels all the way from the Netherlands. They compete in both classical and popular music categories, whistling everything from pitch-perfect opera and Vivaldi to rollicking Texas swing.
Included in this family film are explanations and tips from a sound-effects expert and champion whistlers, archival footage of whistling in its heyday, including Harpo Marx, Monty Python, and Elvis, and an insight into the whistling languages of Turkey and the Canary Islands.

Contestants share their ideas on the joys and health benefits of whistling, and their passion is infectious—it is very likely that viewers of the film will walk out with a song in their hearts, ready to whistle a happy tune of their own.
The next film in the series is “Saint Misbehavin’: The Wavy Gravy Movie,” by Michelle Esrich, on Tuesday, April 17, at 7 PM.
