An Elegant Throne for the Porter in You

Available from Antiques at 119 Charles.

Hall Porter Chair; $1,695, available at 30 percent off for a limited time.

This wicker canopy chair is unassumingly tucked in the back of Michael Riendeau and Jack Bone’s but it’s an attention-grabbing piece for sure.

“This is the chair that the porter would sit in near the front door to welcome guests at the grand European houses,” Riendeau explained. “The canopy design was used to help block off any drafts in the hallway.”

Riendeau tells me this particular model is French and was likely made in the 1950s, so it doesn’t date all the way back. Still, it’s a sturdy modern interpretation with Louis XIV-style legs and double-caning along the edges of the bleached fruitwood. The chair was re-upholstered with a more contemporary-looking fabric five or six years ago.

“We sold another chair like this one to Barney’s in Copley,” Riendeau said. “This particular one came from a fabulous home on Louisburg Square where it had been used in the living room.”
