Antiques at 80 Charles Closes Shop, Bank to Move In

Hingham Institute for Savings to open branch.

After 23 years on the Hill, Antiques at 80 Charles closed its doors Monday. Reached Tuesday morning, owner Robert Scholnick said there are many reasons he's closing the store but "can't get into specifics" now.

Scholnick said that he believes Hingham Institute for Savings will be moving into the space at 80 Charles. Patch called the bank Tuesday for confirmation and is awaiting a response.

Scholnick spoke briefly over the phone about the closure as items were being moved out of the store. When asked about the antiques market, Scholnick said it's fair to say that interest in antiques has been dropping over the years.

Antiques at 80 Charles specialized in sterling silver but carried all sorts of antiques, from chandeliers to grandfather clocks to china. Scholnick's mother worked behind the counter.

Last week the store offered deep discounts — up to 70 percent off — its merchandise in preparation for the closing.
