Dean of Grace Cathedral, San Francisco, to preach at Church of the Advent

Church of the Advent welcomes the Very Rev. Dr. Jane Shaw, who in 2010 was installed as the eighth Dean of Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. Dr. Shaw joined Grace Cathedral from the University of Oxford where she was Dean of Divinity and Fellow of New College, Oxford, and taught history and theology at the university for sixteen years. During that time, she was also Canon Theologian of Salisbury Cathedral and an honorary canon of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, and served as Theological Consultant to the Church of England House of Bishops.

Dr. Shaw was educated as an undergraduate at Oxford, has an M.Div. from Harvard and a Ph.D. in History from UC Berkeley, and was awarded an honorary doctorate by Episcopal Divinity School. She is a Fellow of the Society of St. John the Evangelist, an Anglican monastic community in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She is the author of Miracles in Enlightenment England (Yale 2006), Octavia, Daughter of God: the Story of a Female Messiah (Yale 2011), which won the San Francisco Book Festival History Prize, and Practical Christianity (Morehouse 2012). Her current research is on the Moral Imagination, a project she is working on with actress, playwright and Grace Cathedral trustee, Anna Deavere Smith. She is a Visiting Scholar at the Center for the Advanced Study of the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University.
