For this week's recital at King's Chapel, Barbara Poeschl-Edrich, triple harp; Lisa Brooke, violin; Carol Lewis, viola da gamba; and Olav Chris Henriksen, theorbo join forces to present the famous "Harpe Consorts" of early Baroque composer William Lawes.
Lawes was appointed "musician in ordinary" to England's King Charles I in 1635. At court, Lawes wrote music for court masques as well as for the king's private worship. Known for his sublime viol consorts, Lawes also wrote consorts or chamber music for the eclectic "broken consort" of violin, bass viol, theorbo and harp. At the outbreak of the English Civil War, Lawes was posted to the King's Life Guards; he was killed by a Parlementarian in 1645.
Historic King's Chapel is located in downtown Boston at the corner of Tremont & School Streets, just minutes from the MBTA's Park or Government Center stations.
