Trump's MA Job Approval Is Country's Worst: Poll
The president's net rating is at a national low in the Bay State, even though more than third of residents approve of the job he's doing.

It's no surprise that Massachusetts isn't the capital of Trump Country, but would you guess the president's lowest net approval rating in the country is right here in the Bay State? Morning Consult released a poll Tuesday that showed only 35 percent of Massachusetts residents approve of President Trump's job in the Oval Office while 62 percent disapprove. That net difference of -27 percent was the lowest in America.
Massachusetts not cozying up to Trump isn't breaking news, but the net difference is actually a major swing from January 2017. When Trump was sworn in, he had a 43 percent approval rating in Massachusetts and a 47 percent disapproval rating, which was a net difference of -4. That was tied for the fifth-lowest mark at the time.
Trump didn't start out very popular in Massachusetts, winning just 32.8 percent of the vote in the 2016 election. Since then, his ongoing war of words with popular U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren hasn't endeared him to the public. (Warren, for her part, usually hits back.) In March, Trump singled out Lawrence as a "sanctuary city" partly responsible for New Hampshire's opioid crisis.

The rhetoric hasn't been one-sided. Most recently, outspoken Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone said he won't drink Sam Adams beer anymore because the company's founder met with Trump last week. One small business faced major backlash after being photographed smiling while Trump signed an executive order nearby.
The Boston Globe last week called for a nationwide editorial response on Trump's "dirty war against the free press." Hundreds of news outlets are expected to take part Thursday.

Neighboring Rhode Island had a -21 net approval rating in Tuesday's poll, a 4 percent drop from how the Ocean State felt in January. New Hampshire had a -12 net approval rating, which is a 2 percent increase from the start of Trump's term.

Only 22 states had a positive net view of the president's job performance in Morning Consult's latest poll; That's down from 38 states at the start of his presidency. Trump's highest net approval rating in Tuesday's poll was 31 percent in Wyoming. His highest overall approval rating was 63 percent in West Virginia and Alabama. His highest disapproval rating was 77 percent in the District of Columbia.
