Belmont Field Hockey Stonewalled at Winchester
Despite dominating play, Marauders fall on the road.
The Belmont High field hockey team unloaded a barrage of shots Monday, Sept. 20, at Winchester but failed to convert on all but one.
The Marauders (3-1) put 15 shots on goal, compared to Winchester's three, yet fell to their Middlesex League opponents 2-1.
"Their goalie (Annie DeRosa) was phenomenal," Belmont coach Jessica Smith said, "and we just didn't get the right touch here and there."

The Marauders dominated the entire game, controlling possession and field position and gaining a plethora of penalty corners. However, their shots kept going just wide and their one-on-one chances against DeRosa failed.
Winchester coach Michelle White only had one explanation for the outcome.

"Luck," she said simply.
White said her team, also 3-1, didn't play well, but her junior goalie bailed them out.
"[DeRosa] is hands down the reason we were able to come out on top," she said.
Down 2-0 with less than three minutes to play, Belmont's Caroline McCarthy scored off a pass from Becca Moore to pull the Marauders within one.
Belmont rattled off four more shots in the waning minutes but failed to pull even.
Winchester's Alyssa Aharonian scored 6 minutes, 30 seconds into the game to put her team on top 1-0. Teammate Emily Savage, a sophomore, extended the lead three minutes into the second half with a goal off a corner.
Moore controlled the game up front for Belmont, while center back Katie Ananian led the Marauder defense.
McCarthy, Britta Marden, Erin O'Donnell, Melissa Habelow, Simone Steinberg and Catherine Noone also contributed to Belmont's attack. Sarah Buckley was in goal.
Belmont returns to action at Burlington at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept 23.
