Belmont In Midst of Scoring Drought
Senior Babe Ruth team has produced a single run in past 21 innings.
The young Belmont Senior Babe Ruth team has only scored one run during a current three-game skid.
Belmont, most recently, was held scoreless by right-hander Tyler Finigan of the Medford Mad Dogs in a 7-0 loss Monday, July 26, at Brendan Grant Memorial Field in Belmont.
"We've been less than productive at the plate," Coach Dan Kelleher said after the loss, "but that's been the story all year long."
In the previous two games, Belmont (10-10) fell to Cambridge 4-1 and was shutout by the Malden Bambinos 3-0.
"We do have the youngest team in the league," Kelleher added, "so hopefully they're gaining experience for next spring (during the high school season) when it really counts."
On Monday, Belmont threatened early, loading the bases in the bottom of the first inning. However, it was Medford (14-4-1) that was able to execute.
With the bases loaded in the top of the second inning, Finigan, a rising senior at Medford High School, hit a three-run double to break a scoreless tie. Later in the inning, he scored a run, giving himself even more insurance on the mound.
Belmont got two runners in scoring position again in the bottom half of the inning, off a double by second baseman Michael Vona and single by pitcher Collin McNamara, but, once again, left them stranded.
Center fielder Christian Raymond singled in the fourth inning, and then Belmont was held hitless over the final three innings.
McNamara, the under-19 team's only high school graduate, settled down after the third inning, allowing three more runs to a potent Medford offense by the game's end.
Belmont returns to action against the Medford Indians at 5:45 p.m. tonight at Brendan Grant Memorial Field. The team faces the Mad Dogs again at 5:45 p.m. on Wednesday at Medford's Playstead Park, before concluding its season next week.
