Community Mourns Beloved Belmont Crossing Guard

Laurette Stevens was a familiar face for Winn Brook School students for decades.

BELMONT, MA — Laurette Stevens, a beloved crossing guard in Belmont, died earlier this month. Police and the school community mourned her loss, remembering her as a friendly and familiar face over several decades. Stevens was 82-years-old.

Stevens died on Jan. 3, leaving behind her four adult children and their spouses and grandchildren. According to her obituary, "Her life was greatly impacted by the many children she crossed during her long career as a Belmont crossing guard."

Stevens became a fixture in the community, serving as the crossing guard for the Winn Brook School for 39 years at the intersection of Cross Street and Brighton Street. On Saturday, Belmont police published an emotional Facebook post, honoring Stevens.

"If you grew up the neighborhood near Winn Brook School or if your children attended school at the Winn Brook from 1981 until this year, then chances are School Crossing Guard Laurette Stevens helped you," the post reads in part.

With over 200 reactions, the post was flooded with comments from residents reminiscing on their time with Stevens.
