Enrolling in a degree or certificate program or taking professional development courses can advance a person’s career, launch them into a new field, or update their knowledge and skills. While often many students feel as though it is too expensive or difficult to fit into their already busy schedules, Middlesex Community College creates access to education in a variety of ways.

“Our partnerships with local businesses and organizations have helped us understand what employers are seeking, allowing us to build programs and courses that are geared to those needs,” said Judy Burke, MCC’s Executive Director of Institutional Advancement. “When companies provide benefits such as tuition reimbursement to their employees, Middlesex is able to act as the bridge between employees or potential employees and more satisfying careers, leading to a better educated workforce.”

Many employers in the local area – including Lowell General Hospital, Raytheon, CVS, Verizon, McDonalds, Chipotle and UPS – assist their employees in paying for their education. Middlesex can help students use their tuition reimbursement in a way that works best for them.

Through tuition reimbursement, MCC can invoice a student’s employer or allow students to pay their bill after they are reimbursed by their employer. MCC can also offer trainings and programs for employees – paid for by employers – with the Corporate Education and Training program.

“The tuition assistance program that was developed between MCC and Lowell General has been transformative in providing meaningful professional development and financial access to higher education for our staff,” said Deborah Bergholm-Petka, System Director of Culture & Engagement for Lowell General and the Wellforce healthcare system. “We truly value our partnership with MCC.”

MCC’s Corporate Ed. works directly with companies, businesses and organizations to build programs that work best for them. Trainings – such as management and leadership, basic skills, health care, technology, public safety and other topics based on individual needs – can happen on location, online or at MCC. With these partnerships, Middlesex stays relevant while playing an important role in educating employees across a variety of industries.

“The needs of employers, employees and industries have changed in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic and Middlesex has been working with companies throughout to stay up-to-date and design trainings that respond to these changes,” said Lisa Tuzzolo, MCC’s Director of Corporate Education and Training. “Moving forward, Middlesex and Corporate Ed. are prepared to continue being leaders of educating the workforce, enhancing careers and companies’ prospects, and stabilizing the Commonwealth’s economy.”
